Standing Water in a Viking Dishwasher: A Boston Diagnosis
A film of water in the sump is designed behaviour; a level deep enough to cover the filter is a drainage failure. Work through the filter stack, the drain hose and the disposer knockout before blaming the pump — the sound of the drain step separates a blockage from a dead one.
The door swings open at the end of the programme and there is a pond around the filter, deep enough that the cutlery baskets are standing in it. The dishes may even be clean. That combination — a wash that worked and a drain that did not — is one of the most common Viking calls we take, and most of the time the answer sits somewhere a homeowner can actually see.
A wet sump is normal, a full one is not
A film of water in the recess under the lower rack is designed behaviour. It keeps the pump seal from drying out between programmes, so a bone-dry tub was never the goal. What is wrong is water standing above that recess: enough to move when you pull the basket, enough to cover the filter, enough to slop over the lip if the machine is rocked.
The practical test is height rather than presence. Wet to the touch with no visible surface means residue, and residue is normal. A surface you can see, with cutlery tips submerged and the filter underwater, means the machine failed to empty. Anything between those two states is worth watching for a couple of runs before anything gets taken apart.
Before touching a thing, get three facts straight. When did it start, and did it arrive overnight or creep up? Does it happen on every programme or only one — a rapid cycle gives the drain step less room and will expose a marginal drain first. And has anything been done to the kitchen: a new waste disposer, altered plumbing under the sink, a floor laid, the machine drawn out and pushed back.
That last question earns its keep in Boston. In the North End the kitchen is three or four floors up and the machine shares one cramped waste run, behind plaster, with the sink and often with the flat above. When that run starts to load up, the dishwasher complains first, because it is the lowest-powered appliance draining into it. A sink that gurgles while the machine is emptying is worth more than anything you will find inside the tub.
Pulling the filter and reading what is on it
The filter sits in the floor of the tub and comes out by hand: a cylindrical coarse section that twists free, and a flat fine screen underneath. Take the lower rack out first. Viking series differ in the detail, so turn gently and let the assembly tell you which way it releases — then look at what is on it before you rinse, because that is the diagnosis.
Paper labels off jars, seed husks and shreds of lettuce mat across the mesh and block it physically; water cannot get through a sheet of soaked paper however hard the pump works. A soft grey film that smears under a finger is grease, which says something about wash temperature and about rinsing habits, and it lines the drain path as thoroughly as it lines the screen. A hard, pale, gritty crust is mineral, and it accumulates over a far longer period.
With the filters out, the sump below is visible. This is where the fragment of a broken glass, a cherry stone, a chip of bone or a twist-tie ends up, and any of them can hold the impeller still. Switch the machine off at its breaker before a hand goes anywhere near that opening, and lift debris out with fingers or pliers rather than flushing it deeper in.
Wash the filter in warm water with a soft brush — nothing wire, nothing abrasive — and make certain the coarse section locks home on the way back. A filter left a quarter-turn short passes everything it was supposed to catch straight through to the pump. The drain hose, the high loop and the air gap
Water is pushed out of the tub by the pump and then handed over to gravity, and the shape of that handover is what stops the waste line siphoning back. Before it drops to the drain, the hose has to climb higher than the water standing in the tub — done either as a high loop strapped up beneath the counter or through an air gap set into the sink deck.
The air gap is the small chrome cylinder beside the tap. Some installations have one and some rely on the loop instead; both are common, and which is required is a code question for a plumber rather than something to change on a hunch. If yours spits water across the counter mid-cycle, that is not the fault itself, it is the report: the outlet side is restricted and the water has nowhere else to go. Its cover lifts off by hand.
Then there is the disposer. A new waste disposer arrives with a knockout plug sealing its dishwasher inlet, and if whoever fitted it never punched that plug out, the machine cannot discharge a drop. The symptom is total, and it dates precisely to the day the disposer went in, which is the clue — nothing else fails that neatly.
Kinks are the other post-renovation classic. In Ashmont, where a gut renovation has often moved the kitchen back into what used to be the pantry, the drain run is longer than it was and the surplus hose ends up coiled and pinched behind the machine. Roslindale two-families throw up the reverse: a full-size machine in a shallow run, with the hose crushed flat against the back wall the moment the cabinet closes.
Telling a blockage from a dead pump
You have ears and no meter, so use them. Cancel the programme, start the drain step and listen with the door shut. A pump turning freely and moving nothing runs at a steady high pitch with no water noise behind it. A pump that never energised makes no sound at all, and the silence is itself the finding. A pump loading against a blockage growls, changes note and often gives up.
There is also a check valve in the discharge path whose only job is to let water out and refuse to let it back. Stuck open, the tub refills quietly once the pump stops, which reads as “it drained and then it did not”. Stuck shut, the pump works hard and nothing leaves. Both feel like a pump fault from the kitchen and neither one is.
Stop at the sump. Filters, visible debris and the accessible end of the hose are homeowner territory; the toe panel, the pump itself, and a machine that has to be unplumbed and drawn out of a cabinet run behind a custom door panel are not. That is what our Dishwasher Repair visits are for.
The machine believes it finished
There is a real difference between a machine that tried to drain and failed and one that never attempted the drain step, and the timing tells you which you have. If the programme ran its normal length and the display cleared with the tub still full, the control was satisfied — which moves the search toward the sensing side rather than a blockage.
A code on the display is a starting point and not a diagnosis. It names what the control observed: a drain step that exceeded its allowance, a level it can still detect, a temperature that never arrived. It does not name the part that failed. Write it down exactly as shown before clearing it, because the code plus what you heard is worth far more to whoever comes out than either on its own.
Running a cancel-and-drain with clean filters and an otherwise empty tub is a useful test in the same spirit. If the water goes, you have learned that the pump can run and the path can pass water on a good day. You have not repaired anything. A machine that empties reliably only on the second attempt is still faulty, and it is usually on its way to not emptying at all.
Where this stops being a homeowner job
Stop at a burning-electrical smell, a breaker that trips when the machine starts, or water on the floor rather than in the tub. Standing water and a tripping breaker together are a wet electrical fault, and the correct move is to leave the circuit off and pick up the phone.
A visit settles what the kitchen cannot: whether the drain pump is being commanded and is drawing what it should, whether the control is reading the level correctly, the state of the check valve and the inside of the hose, and what the stored fault history says about how long this has been building.

How often is the filter supposed to be cleaned?
Follow the interval in the use and care guide for your series rather than a general rule, because manufacturers differ and so do households. What actually drives it is what goes into the machine: heavy scraping, oily pans and unrinsed labels load a screen far faster than a light dinner service does. A quick look every few weeks costs nothing and tells you whether your own interval ought to be shorter than the book's.
The machine drains if I run the cycle again — is it fixed?
No. It means the path can pass water when conditions are perfect, which is information rather than a repair. A partial blockage, a weakening pump and a check valve that sticks intermittently all behave exactly like this, and all of them deteriorate. Keep using it if you must, but note how often the second attempt is needed — that trend is the most useful thing you can hand over.
What does a fault code on the display actually tell me?
It tells you what the control observed, not which component failed. A drain-related code means the machine did not see the tub empty within the time it allows; the cause might be a blocked filter, a kinked hose, a stuck valve or the pump itself, and the code cannot distinguish between them. Write it down before clearing it — it narrows the search even though it does not end it.
